Evaluation

The name of our piece is brief encounter, Our piece conforms to short films as it is a low budget production with tells a story of to people falling in love in a book shop we had a short cast of 4 unknown people and is less than 30 mins long it also has a non conventional ending with robbers coming in the library to hold the people in the library hostage
The original idea for our short film on a train and a man come on the train to show 7/7 bombing however as it wasn’t a practical idea we changed the idea where some robber come intro a book shop and hold them hostage however due to another change in location we had to change the idea around as the location wasn’t as we planned.
Our short film is influenced by the match.com, as we tried to get the same feel and the same whimsical look we has the same sort of story line with a man an a women who fall for each other in a shop our short film has minimal speech and relies on there facial expression to tell the story.
I really liked the location which we used even though it wasn’t the location we originally had in mind which was a book shop. I think it had a nice rich look to it which fit the story line well however due to it being a different location we had to change the story line on the day of filming because of this I don’t think our ending works well and may leave the audience confused. I also like the coloring that we put on top of the clips we made it look brighter with a slight grainy effect, by doing this it made the film look more like the match.com advert however some clips looked better than other as they had natural lighting.
In our short film we used a lot of different camera techniques for example we used low and high angle shots to show there emotion from different perspectives we also used some over the shoulder shots and close ups .continuity is used a lot on our shot film especially in the beginning of our short film when she is walking in to the library and talking to the librarian we thought that this was very important to keep the audience interested and so the story flows well.
One of my roles was to find the location which was the hardest of them all it took me two week to find it. One down fall was that we wanted a book shop and every time I asked they said that a book shop is a quite environment and that we would make too much noise and may disrupt their customers , I then thought about filming in a library however I had and  contact the Southwark and  Lambeth  film council to get a filming license to do so , they closed off the library which they let us film in which was nice off them .My other roles was to do the production schedule and the props me and Jerome both made the presentation. We both took turns to film our short film however Jerome took more of the director roles as it was his idea.
We wanted to use music that connected with the story of two people falling in love we went on sound wave to contact some artist about there songs and whether or not we could use it for our project we did find one song that fit our short film perfectly however we were unable to use it.
When it came to the tittles we wanted then to look like a hest with the name “brief encounter “fast paste and really grab the audiences attention and then right after the title come up the character name will appear like in ocean 11 we wanted to do this because our story is a tragic love story where the male protagonist dies at the end when the two robber come in to the library and then end it then goes back to the names of the actors and me and Jerome’s name.
Overall I think that Jerome and I worked very well together considering that we have never worked together before and I think that our piece came out very well.

filming

We used kingswood house to film our short film. Me and Jerome arranged to meet before the actors came which was a good thing as we realised that we had to change the story a bit to fit the location we also move some of the furniture around so it would look better on camrea . Most of our actors did arrive on time however our male lead was an hour late which was a big problem as that only gave us 4 hours to film because of the filming licence so me and Jerome when outside and took some shots of the out side and the Kingswood sign

when he arrived we briefed everyone what we wanted them to do and  reminded them that because our short film wont have a lot of dialog that it would rely  on there facial expressions we then had a problem with the boom mic as the end of it wouldn’t say on we then started to film in chronological order as we thought it would be less time consuming we tried to shoot each shoot at least 3 time to have a variation on different shots I was mainly using the camera and Jerome was on the boom because we both thought that was he was the one who came up with the idea he should take more of  a directors roles

my  favourite  shot of the day would be the wide angle shot when they 1st start flirting I like the compensation of the shot I also like the natural lighting another shot I really like was the pov of the girl looking at the boy throw the banister I think it really worked well

I think we should have had more time to filming however I had to put a start and finish time which was 1 – 5 and I thought we would have had long enough , I think if we had this time our work would have been better

Getting A Location

Getting the location was one of my job and i think it was one of the hardest task i had to do, as our preferred location was a book shop and if we were to film in a book shop we would be making alot of noise and this was somthing alot of the owners were afraid of , i then whent to a library to see if they would be okay with it and i was told to get intouch with the southwark film council so i would film grove vale or dulwich library however as its a public place i was unable to film there but was told that i could film in kingwood house library and they would open it up on the day it was closed for us to film after I confrimed that that place i had to go online an fill out an application for a filming perment and then was told i had the all clear to film ..
